Point Sur Lighthouse, Big Sur

Point Sur Lighthouse

Point Sur Lighthouse in Big Sur, California

The lighthouse is located approximately 19 miles south of Rio Rd. in Carmel. Point Sur Lighthouse is now a California State Historic Park.  It is located 361 ft above sea level. The lighthouse is on the National Register of Historic places. It is still in current use with an aero-beacon to guide ships along the coast. This area has always been a hazard for ships to navigate thru. There were numerous ships wrecks in the area but it still took until 1889 to get a working lighthouse in this location.

Point Sur Lighthouse has been in continuous operation since 8/1/1889.  It was occupied by Lighthouse keepers up until 1974.  At that point it was automated.

Cost is $10 for Adults and $5 for up to $17.   The lighthouse is only open thru guided tours led by docents. If you can go on the moonlight tour – it is well worth the small additional cost of $5. Be prepared for lots of wind. Dress in layers. Bring your camera or bring your camcorder. The scenery is spectacular! You may also see grey whales on their migration and possibly Humpback and Blue whales.
