- Point Lobos State Reserve – a California State Park. The famous phrase “The Greatest Meeting of the land and Water in the World” coined by landscape artist Francis McComas is not really an exageration. The scenery, the beaches, the walks – this is a don’t miss opportunity if you visit the Monterey Peninsula! If you like to walk, paint, photography, jog, scuba dive this is the location!Point Lobos is a short 3 mile drive, south of Carmel on Highway One. You can get access daily at 8 am and closing time is 7 pm. The entrance fee currently (2011) is as follows:
- Cars – $10 (Seniors $9, disabled discount card $5)
- Vans, small buses: $50 (Ten to twenty-five passengers)
- Large Bus: $100
- Annual Day Pass: $125
- Walk in – Free
On a busy day you may have to wait in line until one car, vehicle leaves the park. Or you can park outside along the highway and walk in for free.
If you want to scuba dive – best to reserve in advance as there are limits as to the number of divers.
There is a very active Docent/Volunteer group at the reserve. There are a number of guided walks. There is also the Whaler’s Cabin Musem with great historical displays of the area. There is also an information station staffed by docents – usually from 9 to 5 pm. You can also buy postcards, books and other items here.
Two trails are wheelchair accessible. You may be able to borrow a wheel chair – ask at kiosk or at the info station. A third trail is being redone to be wheelchair accessible also.
